Girls’ Night In

friends

Women need their friends. They need to talk to them. They need to spend time with them. They need to confide in them. And, often, spending time with girlfriends means planning a GNO – Girls’ Night Out. But a GNO isn’t the only way to go. You could also plan a GNI – Girls’ Night In – and here are some great ideas.

Movie Night

friendsWho doesn’t love to get together with friends and watch some movies? Plan a movie night with your girlfriends, but perhaps pick a theme. Maybe you could watch all John Hughes movies or Nicholas Sparks movies. Of course, you need fun food and drinks. Check out these “grownup junk foods” and cocktails!

Cook Together

Another great idea for a GNI is to cook together. You could all prepare dishes related to one specific type of cuisine. You could bring in a chef to show you how to prepare a new meal. You could even have one member of your friend group show you how to prepare her signature dish. Cooking together is a great way to spend some quality time together and makes it easy to have conversations.

Pinterest Night

Is everyone in your group a fan of Pinterest projects? Do you all have boards full of projects you’ve never made? Then a Pinterest Night could be the answer. Pick a project that you can all do together or have a couple of friends bring the materials for smaller projects and let them act as the “instructors” for your GNI. Next month you can choose new “instructors” and complete new projects. Need a project idea? This DIY Dry Erase Menu Board is easy!

Game Night

Game Night can be a great way to spend an evening. You can play board games, download Jackbox Games, or play games such as Pokeno or Bunco.

Spa Night

If you all need a little pampering, a spa night is perfect. You can pick up some nail polishes and facial masks and have a relaxing night doing some spa treatments at home. You could also call in a masseuse to do ½ hour massages – making it an extra special GNI.

Clothing Exchange Night

Clean out those closets and have a clothing exchange night. Everyone brings over items they no longer want or use (you don’t have to limit it to clothes), and you get to choose new things from what your friends have brought. What does not end up being chosen can be donated to your local homeless shelter or thrift store.

Sleepover

When is the last time you had a good, old fashioned sleepover? It’s probably been a while – so why not plan one with your girlfriends? Pajamas, junk food, and staying up late are fun at any age!

Book Club

Book clubs can be great when you have your friends in the group. And they are the perfect reason to have a GNI. Grab some wine and discuss that bestseller that you all read. Or, try a different format where you all share information on the books each of you are currently reading. No need for lengthy discussions – and maybe you’ll get some ideas for your next book to read.

Yoga Night

Yoga is a great way to stay active and clear the mind – so a yoga night at someone’s home might interest your friends. Lots of times a yoga instructor will come to your home and do a class – and then you can relax with some wine and conversation when you’re done.

Has this sparked some ideas for your next girls’ night in? Text your friends and tell them to mark their calendars because you’ve come up with a plan for the next get-together!

Public Pool Safety Tips

pool swimming

What are your favorite summer activities? Do you enjoy bike riding? Do you like to go hiking? How about swimming? While they’re all popular summer activities, swimming may top the list when the hot weather rolls in.

pool swimmingSwimming is a great way to stay in shape, especially if you need an activity that puts limited stress on your joints. It’s also an awesome way to cool off during the hot summer months. If you’ll be heading to the pool here at Haddon Towne Center or another public pool to exercise or to beat the heat, keep these tips in mind.

Don’t Swim Unattended

This is probably the most crucial rule when it comes to swimming. No one should ever swim unattended – even strong swimmers. If a lifeguard is unavailable, there should always be someone with you while swimming in case something unexpected happens, and help is needed. Children should always be supervised as it only takes an instant for them to get into trouble.

Walk Around the Pool

Most pools have signs posted around the perimeter asking everyone to walk. This is another important safety rule. Often, with multiple people in and out of the pool, the deck can become wet and slippery. Falling is a risk when the pool deck is slippery, and while it can happen when you’re walking, if you’re running your risk increases.

Wear a Life Vest if Needed

If you have a child who is not a strong swimmer, have them wear a life vest. Life vests should be approved by the US Coast Guard in order to ensure safety. Even adults who are not comfortable in the water should be encouraged to wear a personal floatation device

Do Not Dive

This is another common sign around pools. In order to avoid injury, do not dive. Diving is in shallow pools is a common cause of neck and back injuries.

No Glass Around the Pool

Please do not bring glass containers to a public pool. If a glass container gets broken around the pool, most likely the pool will have to be drained in order to ensure that there is no glass in the pool. This means no swimming for you and everyone else who uses the pool until the process is complete.

Know CPR

CPR is a life-saving skill and if you have the opportunity – take a CPR class. Your local Red Cross runs regular CPR classes.

Clean Up After Yourself

When you go to the pool, you probably bring some snacks and drinks, along with towels and sunscreen and whatever else you may need for an enjoyable afternoon. Be sure you clean up your area before leaving. Make sure trash gets thrown away, and you have all of the towels and toys you may have brought with you.

Follow Any Posted Rules

There may be additional rules posted at the pool. Take a moment to read them. They are posted for your safety and the safety of others.

Be Respectful of Others

Please be respectful of those around you. If you have music, make sure it’s not loud. Avoid shouting and yelling when possible. Keep an eye on your children. All of these things will help to make the pool a pleasant place to hang out.

When it gets hot this summer, head to the pool. Cool off, swim laps or play a game of Marco Polo with your children – because the summer weather won’t be here forever – so enjoy it while it lasts.

Summer 2019 Movies Not to Miss

movie bowl

This summer you probably have a list of things you want to do. Go to the lake. Eat soft ice cream. Play some mini golf. Take a bike ride. After all, summer is all about being outside and enjoying the great weather.

But, if a rainy day comes along or the temperature is so hot that you can’t imagine spending another minute outside, then head to the movie theater. Summer is also the season of blockbusters! This summer should be no exception!

movie bowlGodzilla: King of Monsters (May 31st)

If you love monster movies and were a fan of the 2014 Godzilla movie, then you are looking forward to this sequel. Stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, and Sally Hawkins will all face off against Godzilla, plus a few other mighty monsters.

Rocketman (May 31st)

Musical biopics are very popular right now and the next one to be released is “Rocketman.” This movie tells the story of Elton John from his life as a child musical prodigy to his battle with addiction to his prolific musical career. There’s also a touch of fantasy in this movie – so Paramount’s billing of it as a musical fantasy is quite accurate.

Dark Phoenix (June 7)

Summer isn’t complete without a good superhero movie, and so the X-Men series brings you Dark Phoenix. Sophie Turner stars as Phoenix and is joined by Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. This is the 12th movie in the X-Men series – and they show no signs of slowing down.

Late Night (June 7)

Emma Thompson stars as a late night talk show host who thinks she’s going to be replaced. Mindy Kaling stars as the only female writer to work on Emma’s show. Mindy wants to help Emma keep her show and bring about some big changes. Two great actresses in one great summer movie.

Men In Black: International (June 14)

The Men in Black have always protected the universe. This summer Chris Hemsworth, Liam Neeson, and Tessa Thompson are back to help. But, there’s one problem. There seems to be a mole in their very own organization.

Toy Story 4 (June 21)

Pixar brings the 4th installment in the Toy Story series this summer. Both of your favorites – Buzz and Woody – are back and will introduce you to a newcomer, Forky. You’ll also see what happens to them as Bonnie takes them on a summer road trip. Kids will love this sequel!

Spider-man: Far From Home (July 5)

Peter Parker wants to go on vacation to Europe this summer, but is it really going to be a carefree vacation? No. Peter finds that he has a new enemy, Mysterio, who he’ll need to fight.

The Lion King (July 19)

Walt Disney brings this new version of the Lion King this July. This movie is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of the original and has a lot of star power behind the voices. Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, Beyonce, Seth Rogen, John Oliver and many more will help bring all of your favorite characters to life. Casting began two years ago for this movie – and it’s finally coming to life!

Even if a rainy day doesn’t happen this summer, there are some great movies to go and see. Head to the movie theater with a bucket of popcorn and watch one of these films. Or, head to the drive-in and see one on the big screen. These blockbusters are sure to keep your attention!

How to Make Friends When You’re New to the Area

making new friends

Moving to a new city can be exciting, but also a bit overwhelming. You need to move all of your stuff and get settled into your new home. You need to learn your way around your new city. And then you need to make new friends.

making new friendsWhen you were in school, the challenge of making new friends was reasonably easy. You were surrounded by people in a similar situation to yours. As you get older, it may seem to be more difficult. But it doesn’t have to be. Use these tips to make some new friends.

Visit Places Close to Home

Now is the time for you to become a “regular.” Find yourself a favorite coffee shop close to your new apartment. Start grocery shopping at one of the local stores. Bring your dry cleaning to the nearest dry cleaner. You will eventually become known by the local clerks, and you may be surprised by the number of people you meet by frequenting local establishments.

Smile

Yes, it may be as simple as smiling at someone in order to start a conversation. Smile at your new neighbors. Smile at people you pass on the street. Part of making new friends is showing that you are open to meeting new people.

Join the Gym

If you love group exercise, then joining a gym or fitness center could be the answer. What better way to meet people who have similar interests in maintaining a healthy lifestyle than to head to the gym.

Co-Workers Can Be Friends

If a new job brought you to your new location, then be sure to get to know your co-workers. You may find that you work with people who like some of your same hobbies or are interested in similar things as you. They’ll also be a great resource for where you can go to meet new people and check out interesting places.

Try a Meetup

Meetup is a website that allows you to find groups that are “meeting up” to do various activities – everything from running a marathon to drinking wine at the local bar. You can join groups to try something new or find groups doing what you love.

Take a Class

Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn? How about taking a class? Whether it’s a continuing education course, a cooking class or a knitting class, learning something new can be an excellent way to meet new people.

Head to Local Events

Be sure to check out local festivals and events. Festivals and events are often frequented by local folks who are supporting these local activities. (These are great places to smile!)

Volunteer

How about meeting new people and doing good for your community? Then you need to volunteer. Most communities are in desperate need of volunteers. Check out your local food pantry, soup kitchen, homeless shelter or animal shelter for opportunities.

Invite Some Neighbors Over

A simple way to make new friends is to knock on your neighbors’ doors and invite them over. Host a Sunday morning coffee or a Friday night happy hour and get to know the people around you. You may find that you have a pretty social group of neighbors.

Try an App

There are several apps you can download to try and connect with people in your area. Nextdoor, Bumble, Peanut, and Skout are just a few of the many apps out there. Find one you like and give it a try!

Meeting new people can be a daunting task, but when you try some of these suggestions you just may find it’s easier than you think.

9 Tips for Shopping Your Local Farmers Market

farmer's market

farmer's marketIf you’re tired of shopping at your local grocery store, it may be time head someplace new – like your local farmers market. While farmers markets are known for providing you with quality locally grown produce, they’ve really transformed into a place where you can find all sorts of locally produced products, like honey, meats, eggs, produce and much more. Use these tips the next time you head to the farmers market so that you come home with some delicious stuff.

  1. Don’t Go with a List: When you go to the grocery store, you often shop with a list. A list prevents you from picking up unnecessary items and helps you make sure you have everything you need for your meal plan. But, when you head to the farmers market – forget the list. You never know what you will find at the farmers market. Vendors may vary from week to week. The products that they have available may change from week to week, too. Be flexible with what you want to buy.
  2. Walk the Entire Market First: Because the vendors may change and the items available may change, it’s a good idea to walk the entire farmers market before you start shopping. You’ll be able to see what everyone has to offer and make some choices before you start spending.
  3. Know What’s In Season: It’s always good to know what’s in season locally. This will help you to know what may be grown locally and what vendors may be bringing in to supplement their stand.
  4. Bring Your Own Bags and/or Cart: It’s always a good idea to bring some reusable bags to the farmers market, and even a cart if you plan on buying lots of stuff. Most vendors will have plastic bags, but they are often thin and can’t handle the weight of all of the great produce and items you may be buying.
  5. Bring Small Bills and Change: With lots of people trying to make purchases, it’s important to have small bills and change to pay your vendors at the farmers market. Vendors will appreciate not having to make change for large bills, and exact change makes transactions go even quicker.
  6. Talk to the Farmers and Staff: Do you know who knows the most about the products available at the farmers market? The farmers and their staff, of course! If you want to know what’s in season now and what’s coming up in the next few weeks all you have to do is ask. If you have questions about a new product or how to prepare something – the farmers and their staff can probably help you. Most of the time you will find that the local farmers are extremely friendly and love to share with you about their products.
  7. Shop Early or Shop Late: When it comes to shopping at the farmers market, there are two different types of people: those who shop early and those who shop late. The early shoppers head to the market in hopes of buying the best quality available to them, while the late shoppers hope that they might score a few deals as the vendors are heading home at the end of the day. Decide which shopper you want to be – or just head to the farmers market when it’s convenient for you!
  8. Be Open to Trying New Things: Your local farmers market will have different produce and other items available each week as things come into season. You may even see some things that you don’t recognize. Be open to trying new things. Ask the vendors about their different products and how they would recommend preparing them. You might come away with something new that you just love.
  9. Share with Your Friends: Be sure to tell your friends about your favorite local farmers market – even about your favorite local vendors at the market. This is how you help support your local farmers market and the vendors who come each week.

Now you’re all set to head to the farmers market. Where are your favorite local farmers’ markets? What do you look forward to buying when you go there?

Great Ideas for Decorating on a Budget

interior design

Who doesn’t like to change up things around the home? After all, a well-decorated home showcases your personal style. David Hicks said, “The best rooms have something to say about the people who live in them.”

interior designOf course, when it comes to showing off your style, you don’t want it to break the bank. If you’re looking to do some decorating, keep these tips in mind so you can stay within your budget.

Set a Budget and Stick to It

It seems so simple to say, “Set a budget and stick to it,” but this is where most people struggle. You need to decide how much you’re willing to spend on decorating and you need to be firm with this plan. Don’t be swayed by a beautiful piece that is outside your budget. Instead, use that piece as inspiration to find something within your budget that will work.

Rearrange What You Have

You probably have some great pieces in your home right now. Whether it’s furniture or decor, take a look around and think about how you can rearrange what you currently have. This may mean moving items to different rooms or simply rearranging things in the room you’re working on.

For larger pieces of furniture, look at some of the online planners that are available to you. These will allow you to get a sense of what your rooms can look like. Floorplanner and Roomstyler are two that you can check out, although there are lots of others.

Paint

Paint is your friend. It is relatively low in cost and can have a dramatic effect on a room. Whether you paint an accent wall to bring a pop of color to a room or paint an existing piece of furniture to bring new life to it, paint can have a huge impact. If you are renting, check with your landlord about whether or not you’re allowed to paint the walls.

DIY

There are big costs associated with having others do work for you. If you can DIY a project, then you should. While DIY’ing may seem a bit nerve-racking at first, you shouldn’t be afraid to take on projects. There are tons of websites and YouTube videos that can walk you through many of the projects you may want to do.

Watch for Sales

Of course, you watch for sales. Everyone does. But did you know that there are certain times of the year where specific things go on sale? For example, if you’re looking to buy furniture, you should be watching for sales at four key times of the year: Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day. Knowing when key sales will take place can save you big money on home decorating.

Shop Second-Hand

Second-hand shopping is great when you need to stay on a budget. While you may think of hitting up a Goodwill store or garage sale for second-hand items, there are some other places to check out. Craigslist and eBay are great for finding second-hand goods. Also, Facebook Marketplace and other online garage sale sites have a wide variety of items available.

Go From Ordinary to Extraordinary by Customizing

Perhaps in all of your bargain hunting, you find an item that works for your space, but maybe it’s not exactly what you had in mind. This is where you need to get creative. Can you take an ordinary piece and customize it to make it exactly what you want? Customization can play a key role in getting the style you want on a budget. Paint, additional fabric, or changing out drawer pulls are just a few of the ways you can make your finds come to life.

Are you ready to bring something new to your apartment? Is it time for a change in decor? Set your budget and use these tips to bring style and panache to your apartment without it costing a fortune.

What Does Your Handwriting Say About You?

handwriting

Our personality shines through in many different ways. It’s apparent in the jobs that we have, the hobbies that we take up, and even the type of handwriting we have. Psychologist have started studying what different styles of handwriting can mean about a person. Write a sample sentence on a piece of paper, and see where you fall!

handwritingSIZE

  • Large: If you write in large letters, then you are looking to communicate well with others. You are generally a people person who is desiring to be understood and seen.
  • Small: Writing in small letters shows that you are capable of deep focus and concentration. It can also reflect that you are an introvert at heart.

SLANT

  • None: If you have perfectly up and down lettering, then psychology suggests that you are person who is very pragmatic and enjoys logic. You are deliberate in your actions and are a solid confidant.

LINE SPACING

  • Little Spacing: If your words are jumbled together without much space on a page, it’s safe to say that you aren’t great at time management. You move quickly in the moment with little forethought of the future.
  • Spread Out: Having even spacing among your letters and words shows that you appreciate boundaries. You want things to have their own space so that they can be easily understood.

CONNECTION OF LETTERS

  • Not Connected: Each letter is given its own deliberate beginning and end. You are logical and methodical in your processes. You consider things deeply and weigh your decisions heavily before choosing an option.
  • Connected: You are intuitive and are in tune with your emotions. You can see others and their motives. You’re intelligent and see your role in people’s lives. You’re able to see implications of your actions, and be helpful with advice to others.

PRESSURE

  • Heavy Pressure: You’re passionate and feel emotions strongly. You have a big heart and feel the weight of things intensely. From your fiery spirit, you can react quickly to the intense emotions that you have.
  • Light Pressure: You are less attached to emotional ties. You are able to move place to place without heavy emotional strain. You are comfortable wherever you go. You reserve emotions for big decisions.

You can tell a lot about someone by the way that they communicate with others, whether it be through spoken or written word. Some companies are now using handwriting tests to see if you’d be a good fit for specific types of jobs within the company. We need all personality types to make our world function.
